Public Hearing for Proposed New Rules

A public hearing on proposed rules will be held on July 9, 2018, at 1:30 p.m. in the Lobby Hearing Room, Rhodes State Office Tower, 30 E. Broad Street, 1st Floor, Columbus, OH 43215. Oral and written testimony may be presented by any person affected by the proposed rules.

Board Seeks Comment Regarding One-bite Program

The State Medical Board of Ohio has filed proposed actions concerning rules with the Common Sense Initiative Office. The proposals are available for your comment.

 

Section 4731.251, Ohio Revised Code, requires the Medical Board to adopt rules that establish a program by which all Medical Board licensees may receive confidential treatment for impairment by drugs, alcohol or other substances of abuse.

Rule 4731-16-17: sets forth the requirements of the one-bite program.

Rule 4731-16-18: sets forth the eligibility criteria for program participants.

Rule 4731-16-19: sets forth the requirements for the monitoring organization.

Rule 4731-16-20: sets forth the requirements for the treatment providers.

Rule 4731-16-21: sets forth the requirements for continuing care.

Track Your CE/CME Online With CE Broker

The State Medical Board of Ohio (SMBO) has partnered with CE Broker to simplify your CE/CME tracking and reporting. Using CE Broker Basic, you can track your course completion and report hours free of charge. There is no requirement that licensees sign up for any CE Broker account at this time. It is an optional tool that is being offered.

 

MDs, DOs, DPMs, CTs, GCs, RCPs and LDs – you can use your free CE Broker account to:

  • See what courses you have completed

  • Find board-verified courses

  • Report your CE/CME

  • Learn when you have completed all requirements

  • Contact CE Broker support for help

 

To create your free CE Broker Basic account:

1.     Click here.

2.     Choose from the account options. The free account option is called Basic.

3.     Enter your license number and answer a few easy questions.

 

CE Broker offers additional account options including a Professional Account and a Concierge Account. SMBO licensees are welcome to sign up for these services if interested.

 

Note, entering your continuing education through CE Broker will not automatically renew your license. You will still need to file a license renewal through the eLicense portal. CE Broker allows the Board to verify your completed continuing education following your renewal.

 

SMBO randomly audits a percentage of practitioners CE/CME compliance during each renewal cycle. If you are selected for audit, you will be requested to respond to the audit via CE Broker.

Upcoming Office Closure

The Medical Board's office will be closed on Monday, May 28, 2018 in observance of Memorial Day. The office will reopen at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

 

Physician Continuing Education Rules

Effective 5/31/18, rule 4731-10-02 now permits a licensee to earn one hour of CME for each sixty minutes spent providing volunteer health care services in Ohio to indigent and uninsured persons. A maximum of thirty-three hours per CME period may be earned. Any hours of CME earned under this provision shall be credited toward category two requirements. See 4731-10-02(E) for complete information. 

 

Board Seeks Comment on Proposed Rules

The Medical Board is seeking comments on the initial review of three rules. The proposed language for each rule can be found by clicking on the links below.

The DEAs National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs. If you have unwanted or expired Rx meds, you can find collection sites throughout Ohio: http://bit.ly/2Je84bz

 

According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.4 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.
